Los excesos de Juan M. Corral
Si algo ilustra el libro “Quentin Tarantino: excesos y cinefilia” es precisamente el gusto por el exceso y la particular cinefilia de su autor, Juan M. Corral. Lo que me lleva a suponer que esta persona tiene un ego de lo más desmesurado y unas ganas terribles de polemizar con sus lectores.
La premisa del libro es clara: analizar hasta el último detalle la filmografía de Tarantino para descubrir todo tipo de precedentes cinematográficos que echen por tierra cualquier atisbo de originalidad adjudicada al director estadounidense. Corral enriquece con numerosísimas e ignotas referencias este análisis, alejándose de los lugares comunes y aportando un toque de frescura de lo más agradecido.
El problema reside en el estilo de Corral, que parece que ha escrito el volumen en un estado de febril revancha contra Tarantino. De ahí lo de polemizar: si hay alguien que va a leer este libro es un fan de Quentin o, al menos, alguien interesado en algún aspecto de su obra, por lo que el continuo acoso y derribo al protagonista no puede resultar sino un poco desagradable.
El libro hace un recorrido por la vida y obra del director, arremetiendo especialmente contra la película Pulp fiction. Por alguna razón Corral detesta esta película, considerándola la peor de Tarantino. Sus bajas pasiones le llevan a abandonar toda pretensión analítica -como hace correctamente con Reservoir dogs o Kill Bill, por ejemplo- y el capítulo dedicado a este film no es más que una sarta de ataques a todo lo que al autor no le gusta de la película.
Por el contrario, a Corral le encanta Jackie Brown y el texto correspondiente es un compendio de alabanzas. Siendo Pulp fiction una de mis películas favoritas (la considero la mejor película de los años 90 a nivel mundial), no sentí más que repulsa. Parece que el mayor pecado del film es su carácter comercial. Mi pregunta es: ¿acaso Jackie Brown no lo es? Según Corral, nada en Pulp fiction merece la pena: los personajes, las historias cruzadas, los diálogos… Mi opinión no puede ser más opuesta: si hay una peli de Tarantino donde falla la historia, los personajes no atraen y los diálogos no dejan huella, esa es Jackie Brown.
Compara, si no, a Vincent Vega con Louis Gara, a Jackie con Mia, a Ordell con Marsellus o a Jules con Max. Compara su magnetismo, su fuerza como personajes, su impacto como iconos. Jackie Brown pierde en todos los frentes.
Por otro lado, Corral debe ser alguien peculiar al que le parece molar ir de raro. Lo digo por la aversión que destila por lo que él llama despectivamente películas “de serie A”, tachándolas de comerciales, despreciables y dignas de oprobio y olvido. Por contra, no ahorra halagos al referirse a todo tipo de oscuras películas baratas y de género con adjetivos como “sublime”, “adorable”, “inolvidable”, “simpática” o, incluso, “obra maestra”.
Para gustos, colores. Pero soy de la opinión que en el cine hay unos estándares, y aunque una peliculita gore de karatekas te pueda hacer gracia una noche de birras y pizzas con tus colegas, quieras o no Lo que el viento se llevó será una película mejor. Por sus valores artísticos, de producción o por su impacto social.
Sin embargo, Corral es de esos que se corren de gusto ante cualquier subproducto y luego se atreve a firmar las siguientes lindezas:
-sobre Jean-Luc Godard, “sobrevalorado”, “la mayoría de sus películas son pedantes, megalómanas y estúpidas”.
-sobre David Lynch, “la execrable Wild at heart“, tachándola de “serie A” (como si ninguna peli de Lynch fuera de serie A, cuando lo son todas excepto, quizás, Eraserhead).
-sobre Robert DeNiro, “insoportable”, “sobrevalorado”.
-sobre Wong Kar-Wai, “otro de los imitadores de Tarantino”.
Y, así, otras cuantas desbarradas más a lo largo del libro. Creo que sus propias palabras son lo suficientemente elocuentes.
Nota: sobre el tema de la falta de originalidad de Quentin Tarantino, soy de la opinión de que algo sí que aporta este hombre cuando consigue que sus películas sean tan recordadas, odiadas, queridas o imitadas. Que su ópera prima siga a pies juntillas City on fire de Ringo Lam o que no haya una sola secuencia de toda su filmografía que no sea un pastiche de referencias a mí, sinceramente, casi que me da igual. Tarantino nunca ha presumido de descubrir la pólvora. Pero, mira por dónde, él es quien deja huella. Quizás es porque ha sabido integrar sus influencias en conjuntos tan poderosos visualmente que no puede sino sobresalir entre propuestas mucho más mediocres. ¿Acaso eso no es mérito suyo?
