Phineas Gage

Hace años, creía recordar que nuestra profesora de naturales, cuando teníamos 11 años, nos puso un documental sobre el cerebro en el que contaban la historia de un tipo al que una barra de hierro le atravesó la cabeza y, milagrosamente, no le mató.

Unos años después, en un capítulo de Expediente X, Scully hacía alusión a esta historia. Yo, un adolescente obsesivo, recordé aquel documental y me dije: “lo sabía”. Pero que la anécdota apareciera en dicha serie no me hacía tenerlas todas conmigo.

Este verano, en el FIB, mi compañero de fatigas y yo buscamos drogas y un reportaje y, en el camino, alguien nos pasa un fanzine. Lo ojeo, hasta que en una página hablan de Phineas Gage. El tipo al que una barra de hierro le atravesó la cabeza. Aquí está. Era todo verdad. Arranco la página, tiro lo demás.

Phineas Gage

En 1848, el estadounidense Phineas Gage curra en la construcción de vías férreas. Una explosión accidental hizo que una puta barra de hierro de metro y pico de longitud y varios centímetros de diámetro le atraviese la cabeza, entrándole bajo el ojo izquierdo y asomándole por la coronilla. Las crónicas dicen que, mientras los compañeros ya rezaban por su alma, él estaba consciente y comentaba que no podría seguir trabajando.

Bien, pues no palmó. Perdió masa cerebral, pero la herida drenó y el tío se curó diez semanas después. Lo curioso es que su conducta se transformó. Pasó de ser un tipo agradable y responsable a un desastre. Gage era rudo, malhablando, despreocupado por el dinero y por sus familiares y amigos. Lo más curioso: a pesar de que recordaba perfectamente todo lo anterior y posterior al accidente, empezó a contar mentiras e historias fantásticas sobre su vida.

Se quedó sin curro, empezó a vagar de un lado a otro. Por lo visto, entretenía las fiestas de la alta sociedad haciendo bromas asquerosas con esa especie de segunda boca que tenía bajo el pómulo (supongo que a cambio de unos dólares). Llegó a formar parte del legendario circo de P. T. Barnum. Hasta que murió en 1861, con 38 años.

Desde entonces, es objeto de estudio científico. Lo último que he leído es que su caso ha servido para comprobar que en el lóbulo frontal del cerebro “está” la vergüenza. Típico de la sección de ciencia de los dominicales.
